Prayer & Me

In August, Jeff and I were faithfully reading “My Upmost for His Highest” every night. (If you haven’t heard of it, I highly encourage you to buy a copy and read it. Yes. Buy it.) Since life has gotten significantly busier, we’ve been falling asleep on the couch and are 100% less likely to read something before bed.  But God has still been challenging me on some of the things we read and learned. Namely, on prayer.

What if every prayer experience was a experience with God?

It’s something I’ve always known – prayer is a conversation with the Holy One, not just a machine to ask questions and desire answers.  It’s not just another ritual – but it IS a necessity.

Prayer is designed to be an intimate conversation with God. Many of us know this- but how many of us carve out intentional prayer time with the Lord that is specifically for growing deeper in our relationship, for seeking His presence just to spend time with Him?

I remember in early August, reading devotions on intimate prayer every night and thinking to myself, “I’ll try to be more intentional tomorrow.”

Why not today?

Why does it take me so long to be intentional about the one relationship that matters most?

I want to be clear, I’m not saying short prayers, quick prayers, driving in the car prayers are bad. They are great. Please don’t wait to pray just one time in the day. But if those short prayers are all I do, then I am missing a huge piece in my relationship with God, a huge piece which grows me greatly and changes me completely if I seek Him solely and intimately.

You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”
Jeremiah 29:13

I was going to write on something completely different today, but He is challenging me in this because intimate prayer time is something I fail at daily, constantly. It’s that thing you know you should do… but it just takes time and effort and I don’t have any of it.

Okay, wake up self. It’s one of the most important things I could be doing.
